Another big step towards developing Area IV was taken as ground was broken for the new Middle/High School on Camp Walker at U.S Army Garrison Daegu. Far East District construction division chief Samuel Adkins (third from right) is joined by other dignitaries at the groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 19.

The Far East District, along with U.S. Army Garrison Daegu and Department of Defense Education Activity Korea broke ground on a new high school and middle school at Camp Walker Nov. 19.

“This is a new 21st century school design with interior rooms to include 21st century neighborhood spaces with learning studios, group learning hubs and individual instruction, said Jared McCormick, project engineer at the southern resident office.

This project was designed to accommodate the garrison’s increasing population and will combine the high school and middle school in one location.

“The new school will offer students and educators in Daegu a more flexible and individualized learning environment,” said Alan Heck, Department of Defense Dependent Schools Pacific Area Project Manager. “These modern facilities will also help students maximize their potential and be better prepared for the demands of a 21st century world.”

The design consists of a 142,000 square feet, a split level 2 story facility and will provide adequate and modern academic facilities for 525 students in grades 6 to 12. Construction is expected to be completed in October 2016. Students in U.S. Army Garrison Daegu can expect to make use of the new building after the New Year in 2017.
